Masks have always been an important feature of the Venetian carnival. Once people were allowed to wear masks between the festival of Santo Stefano on December 26 and the start of the carnival season at midnight of Shrove Tuesday.
Carnival on Saint Mark's Square |
Nowadays Venice celebrates its Carnival, and the real feast lasts for 2 weeks.... Masks, colors, music, tourists and Venetians......this is the Carnival!!!!!
Most famous masks are the Bauta, the white small mask with no decortations or colors.... and the Maschera del Dottore della Peste, Plague Doctor Mask: with its long nose, used as a method of preventing the spread of disease.
Just feel free to wear the mask you like, or simply your "normal" face......drink a good coffee and a prosecco, and enjoy the Venetian Carnival!!!!!!
