Venice is a water town, and the lagoon water is brackish water. Once the poople could'nt drink the canals water :-) and they used the "pozzi" (wells): the rainwater was channelled through stone gratings into a sandy sump
that acted as a filter, and was then collected in a central cistern
situated below the well-head. A funnel-shaped layer of clay was placed
around the well to prevent saltwater infiltrating. The water was drawn
up in buckets. Only the women were allowed to get the water, only twice a day. The water was a big problem in a water town!!!!
Almost every campo (square) or corte (courtyard) in Venice has at least one well, they are really a venetian symbol.
For all the visitors: nowadays in Venice there is ONLY drinkable water! You can drink the water in the hotels, cafés, bars.....and, of course, the fountains water!!
Ciao ciao!!!!!! :-) :-) :-) :-)
